History & Structure of Our A.'.A.'. Lineage
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
Aleister Crowley and George Cecil Jones began establishing the A∴A∴ as a vertical system of spiritual attainment in 1906 as a vehicle for an Inner School of wisdom that has existed throughout time.
In “An Account of A∴A∴”, Crowley writes: "From all time there has been an exterior school based on the interior one, of which it is but the outer expression…. But all exterior societies subsist only by virtue of this interior one. As soon as external societies wish to transform a temple of wisdom into a political edifice, the interior society retires and leaves only the letter without the spirit" (p. 39).
The A∴A∴ is a society based on the Law of Thelema, whose central doctrine is “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” (L I:41). Its central aim is simply to lead each aspirant toward their own individual attainment for the betterment of all humanity.
The McMurtry-Cornelius-Johnson lineage is divided into a system of three grades that correspond to the Tree of Life, namely: the man of Earth, the Lover, and the Hermit.
In “One Star in Sight”, we learn the breakdown of our noble Order, which I have modified in various places below to reflect the inclusion of the earlier 10-grade system within the three-grade system as dictated by Liber Legis.
Adepts in the highest branches of the Tree of Life in the Sephiroth of Kether-1 (כתר), Chokmah-2 (חכמה) and Binah-3 (בינה) belong amongst the World Soul, residing above the Abyss. These are the true A∴A∴ initiates who are known as Hermits or members of the Order of the Silver Star (S∴S∴).

Those directly below from Chesed-4 (חסד) to Hod-8 (הוד) are still caught up in the Personal Soul and are known as Rosicrucian's, or members of the Rosy Cross/Rose Croix (R∴C∴). These Adepts are in the Lover grade. Their work is solitary, within themselves. There are no group rituals.

Those residing in the two lowest spheres of Yesod-9 (יסוד) and Malkuth-10 (מלכות) are referred to as being in a Golden Dawn-type of school (G∴D∴) or the man of Earth; other groups like Freemasons and Ordo Templi Orientis reside amongst these lower schools.

Ultimately, the A∴A∴ is private and mostly individual in its work. The course of study includes many different training methods, such as the Qabalah, the Eight Limbs of Yoga, ceremonial magick, and so on.
